Episode 218 Straight Outta Compton Listeners Choice

Perhaps the biggest race snub of the Oscars this year was overlooking F. Gary Grays biopic Straight Outta Compton, a uniformly excellent film about the life of rappers N.W.A. While it did receive a Best Screenplay nomination, this compelling film features stellar acting all around in its portrait of the figures who would become major players in the gangsta rap movement. Ice Cubes own son, OShea Jackson Jr. plays him as an up-and-comer and Jason Mitchell gives tragic dimension to the role of Eazy-E. The rise of N.W.A. is epic, and their importance as cultural icons has been brought to a new generation. This listeners choice comes to us from Anne, a new guest and longtime fan.
